Why visit Santanyí?

These are the main reasons to include Santanyí on your route through Mallorca:

1. Its historic centre with authentic flavour: Cobbled streets, golden stone facades, medieval arches and quiet squares. The centre breathes tradition and tranquility, away from the hustle and bustle.

2. Plaza Major (Plaza de la Constitución): The heart of the town, surrounded by historic buildings, café terraces and the imposing Ajuntament (Town Hall) in Baroque style. It is the perfect place to sit down for a drink and watch life go by.

3. The Church of Sant Andreu: A 13th-century fortress church built on the site of a former mosque. Its square tower dominates the town and its surroundings. Inside it houses an impressive Gothic altarpiece.

4. The weekly market (Wednesdays and Saturdays): The Santanyí market is famous throughout Mallorca. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, the squares and streets of the centre fill with stalls selling fruit, vegetables, cheese, handicrafts, clothing and local products. It is an essential experience. Practical tips for your visit

  • Best time to go: Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October). The weather is perfect and there are fewer people. In summer, the coves are very crowded.

  • Footwear: Wear comfortable shoes for walking on cobbled streets and water shoes or flip-flops for the coves (some have rocks).

  • Market: The Santanyí market (Wednesdays and Saturdays) is very popular. Arrive early (before 10:00 AM) to find parking and avoid crowds.

  • Reservations: In summer, book restaurants in advance, especially in Plaza Major and in the coves.

  • Language: Learn “Bon dia” (good morning) and “Gràcies” (thank you). It is greatly appreciated.

  • Water: Always carry water, especially if you visit the coves or go hiking.

  • Local product: Try the ensaimadaMahon cheese and sobrasada.

  • Respect: The coves of Santanyí are fragile. Do not leave rubbish and respect the natural environment.

  • Cars in coves: In summer, access to many coves (such as Cala Llombards or Cala s’Almunia) is restricted or regulated. Check before you go.
